Abstract:

Intersemiotic translation, which can happen in the process of the translation of drama for theatre, can turn more complicated when the verbal sign system of drama has already undergone interlingual translation. The purpose of this study is to find the intersemiotic changes of translation from page to stage and to show the changes of indexical, iconic, and symbolic signs in the process of intersemiotic translation of the already interlingually translated verbal signs. In this regard, Shakespeareʼ s Macbeth (1606) and its theatrical performance directed by Reza Servati (2010) were selected as the corpus and Peirceʼ s model was chosen as the theoretical framework. The findings of this research demonstrate that all levels of iconical, indexical, and symbolic signs are applicable to the semiotic analysis of the performance. However, there should be a cautious generalization regarding the transfer of iconic signs. The theoretical model of this study can be used to study verbal sign variations of other literary works and other literary genres once they are intersemiotically translated to and adapted for other sign systems such as audio (like music), visual (like painting), and audio-visual (like film).

Abstract:

Background: Schizophrenia is one of the most important and disabling mental disorders in the world. Males and females are equally affected. Diagnosis is a very difficult problem in this disorder. Because the diagnostic systems such as ICD-IO and DSM-IV are mainly subjective, they are not valid and reliable. Essentially, in the future, we will need to more objective criteria in psychiatry especially in diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neurological soft signs are an example of these objective criteria. In this study we evaluated the prevalence of neurological soft signs in schizophrenic patients and compared it with the prevalence of these signs in other psychotic patients (except mood disorders with psychotic features) and normal subjects. Methods: We compared the neurological soft signs (sensory motor integration, motor. Coordination, consequent complex motor acts, primary reflexes, and eye movements) in 30 schizophrenic patients, 30 other psychotic patients (other than mood disorders with psychotic features) and 30 normal subjects. Diagnosis of schizophrenia and also other psychoses were based on DSM-IN criteria. Normal subjects have been selected form the staff of Roozbeh hospital randomly. Results: The difference between the means of motor coordination subscale of neurological soft signs in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (other than mood disorders with psychotic features) were significant (P value<0.04). There were no significant differences between the means of other subscales of neurological soft signs in two groups of patients. Conclusion: There are some disturbances of motor coordination subscale of neurological soft signs in patients with schizophrenia. It seems that, these disturbances are evidence of involvements of basal ganglia, motor cerebral cortex, and cerebellum. So it may be suggested that motor coordination as a marker can be used in differentiation between the schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Abstract:

The systemic perspective does not only apply to living organisms, but also a wide range of cultural systems such as language and social behavior in human communities. A vast volume of interdisciplinary researches was carried out in the field of social sciences and cultural studies with the purpose of using the behavioral patterns of the living systems in order to study the development patterns of the cultural elements. These studies indicated that the complex systems share similar patterns and behaviors at the macro-level. With regard to these researches, the present qualitative study with systemic perspective, analyzes the similarities and differences between the reproduction patterns at a biological level and the reproduction and publication of meaning/information elements at the cultural level. Afterward, the results were generalized to the sign system - concentrating the artistic signs and symbols- in both semantic and morphological dimensions. The present study revealed that the properties of two reproduction strategies in nature, i.e. r-selection and k-selection, could be generalized, at the macro-level, to the reproduction of artistic signs and symbols at a cultural level, despite the obvious differences in the details. Taking into account these similarities in reproduction patterns, with an interdisciplinary perspective and different from other popular analyses, could lead to a different understanding of the reasons for some developments in the amount of reproduction and development of sign systems in various communities.

Abstract:

Introduction: Child neglect is one of the most common types of child maltreatment which has a wide-range of harmful and long lasting impacts on children. Various countries have defined signs to help child experts recognize possible signs of neglect for early assessment and intervention. However, defining it requires consideration of the cultural and social situations of each country which have impact on the perception of child neglect. The purpose of this study is to define these signs in Tehran.Method: Delphi Technique was used in this study to gain the consensus of child experts about physical and behavioral signs of neglect. In this Method, in three rounds, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect and analyze the data.Findings: After the three rounds, 66 signs of child neglect in these two groups were gained through consensus among panel members.Discussion: The results of comprehensive comparison of these signs with signs of other countries and primary needs of children show that the signs cover children’s primary needs and despite the general consistency and similarity between the signs of this research and other countries, there were some differences that may be due to the difference in the priority of experts.

Abstract:

Introduction: Safety signs are considered as visual intermediates for message transmission, which play a crucial role in reducing accidents particularly in petrochemical industries. These signs are effective if designed in compliance with ergonomic principles and based on human factors and cognitive design features. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the psychological effects of safety signs in transmitting message given their design features in a petrochemical industry.Materials and Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was performed on 100 employees in Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex. A-two part questionnaire was used to collect data; the first part about demographic information and the second part about designing features of signs (familiarity, concreteness, simplicity, meaningfulness and semantic closeness). Results: Cognitive design features included familiarity and semantic closeness with a mean of 49.15 and 66.78, respectively. Factors of work experience, age, and academic level had no significant effect on guessing the meaning of signs (p> 0.05).Conclusion: There was no significant association between cognitive features of signs and message transmission. Message transmission of safety signs was affected by other features rather than their design. Therefore, to improve individuals’ awareness about familiarity with particular meaning of signs, ergonomic design of safety signs together with proper training are proposed.

Abstract:

Introduction: Disorder in drinking, fluid deprivation, severe disabilities, increase in water excretion from kidney and non-kidney route and increase in salt consumption are the main causes of hypernatremia. The objective of this study was to determine ocular signs due to hypernatremia Method: 50 male Wistar rats, weighing 250 + 20 g were allocated randomly to 5 groups. Test groups consumed 2, 3, 3.5 and 4 percent salt concentrations respectively as potable water, control group used tap water; with similar living conditions for all groups. Ophthalmic examinations with slit-lamp and fundus camera were performed. Eye response to light and manuel stimuli was considered. This experiment with similar condition was done on pig and rabbit.Result: Short time using of 2% salt solution was not associated with fast and significant ocular changes but its prolonged use accompanied with vascular damage and other ocular signs. Retinal and vitreous hemorrhages were observed 3-4 days after drinking 3% and higher salt solutions followed by an increase in serum sodium level. Other ocular signs in test groups include: vitreous shrinkage, cornea and lens opacities, swelling of optic disc, blindness, vitreous collapse and finally phthisis bulbi. Conclusion: By hypernatremia and hyperosmolarity formation, vitreous lose some of its fluid contents and vitreous shrinkage lead to vascular damage, retinal and vitreous hemorrhage, and retinal detachment.Continuous hypernatremia brought conjunctivitis, corneal and lens opacities, swelling of optic disc, blindness, vitreous collapse and finally phthisis bulbi.

Abstract:

There is an underlying connection between classical Persian poetry and religion. Although religion can be considered as one of the main origins of the poetry, it seems that in the contemporary poetry this connection has become partly weak. Here, we aim to study the religious signs of Forough Farrokhzad’ s poetry, one of the Iranian modern poets. To do so, we initially introduce and discuss Peirce's Theory of Signs. Then, according to this theory, we start to analyze her poems. This aspect of her poetry has not been discussed that much until now. There are plenty of religious signs in Forough Farrokhzad’ s poetry. She uses both Islamic and Christian elements, but the way she chooses the signs and the way she uses them, both are completely different in line with each religion. At the beginning phases of her poetry, the religious signs, which are mainly Islamic, enter into her poems through the classical literary works and therefore they are mostly abstract. But as her poetry grows more mature, she changes the way she applies them. In this phase, the frequency of Christian signs, picked up from Gospel, increases in her poetry. On the other hand, at the same time, the Islamic signs of Forough’ s poetry are picked up from the environment in which she lives, instead of the foresaid classic works. So, as a result, these signs are objective, tangible and related to the folk religion.

Abstract:

The present study looks at poetry and its translation from a Semiotic point of view within the framework of the Post-Structuralist School. Flickering and indeterminacy of signs in the open poetic discourse, intersemiotic and intertextual relations and cultural codes in poetic text, and relations between translation and semiosphere are considered in this study. Poetic translation is always disputable. One problem, which makes poetic translation difficult, is indeterminacy of sign and cultural codes. Certainly, literal translation has no capability of conveying literary quality and in many translations, intersemiotic and intertextual relations and even the nature of signs is changed. The purpose of this study is to show that in translating a poem, some signs are maintained, some are converted to signs related to cultural codes of language, and some are removed. To do this, some poems of Sepehri, Forugh Farokhzad, Shamloo and Nima Yushij translated by Karim Imami and Ahmad Mohit were studied to show that indeterminacy of sign intensify poetry translation. In the intercultural context, there are some common codes which make an extended sign context that is semiosphere. This cultural and historical context-based atmosphere is semiosphere. In translation, the translator goes from one semiosphere to another.
